Holiday weekend stops include Claremore, Grande Prairie COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Some might call Memorial Day Weekend the calm before the storm. Only 13 PRCA-sanctioned rodeos take place this weekend, but that number doubles the following weekend as the first full weekend in June signals the start of the summer rodeo season. Action from the Will Rogers Stampede in Claremore, Okla., and the Grande Prairie (Alberta) Stompede highlight this weekend's action. The Will Rogers Stampede gets under way with the first of three nightly performances on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Grande Prairie Stompede, another three-performance event, gets started on May 28 at 2 p.m. MT. Action continues from Grande Prairie, located in northwestern Alberta about a sevenhour drive from Edmonton, with matinee shows on May 29-30. The Grande Prairie Stompede is one of Canada's most lucrative rodeos, offering $6,250 in added money per event. Other PRCA rodeos taking place this weekend are in Kansas City, Kan.; Brewster, Wash.; Mesquite, Texas; Bandera, Texas; Maple Creek, Saskatchewan; Woodstown Pilesgrove, N.J.; Coulee City, Wash.; Marysville, Calif.; Salem, Ore.; and Yucca Valley, Calif.
