Champs headline saddle bronc leaders

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Dan Mortensen of Billings, Mont., who has won six world saddle bronc riding titles and is tied the legendary Casey Tibbs for most ever in the event, is already $40,000 ahead of where he was last year heading into the summer run.

Now that Mortensen holds the top spot in the world standings by nearly $12,000 heading into the summer run, Mortensen seems primed to break Tibbs' mark. It's a crowded house behind Mortensen, all within striking distance. Glen O'Neill of Didsbury, Alberta, the Pace Picante ProRodeo Chute-out saddle bronc riding champion and 2002 world champion, sits second. Cody DeMoss of Crowville, La., and four-time world champion Billy Etbauer of Edmond, Okla., each of whom has spent time at No. 1 in the world standings before Mortensen took over in late March, rank third and fourth, respectively.

And don't forget about Rod Hay of Wildwood, Alberta. The 14-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and seven-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Association saddle bronc riding champion may be the most talented rider without a world title, and he seems to hover around the top every year. He has missed the Wrangler NFR just once (1991) since joining the PRCA in 1989.

Eleven of the top 12 saddle bronc riders competed in the Pace Chute-out.
